Katherine Coates, 73, of Milton, Florida passed away Thursday, August 1, 2019 at Sacred Heart Hospital. She died from complications of kidney and heart disease.

Kathy was born May 16, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She attended Jefferson High School. After graduation, she enlisted in the Army and served for seven years. She was honorably discharged in 1976 and devoted herself to her family. Most recently, Kathy volunteered at Santa Rosa Medical Center in Milton. Kathy married Master Sargent Charles Coates February 2, 1973. They shared two daughters. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1976, they relocated their family from Minnesota to Florida, living in Tampa, St Petersburg, Orlando, Ocala and lastly, Milton.

Kathy was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 2011, her parents, Paul and Evelyn Vance, and a brother, Jeff Vance.

Kathy is survived by two daughters, Kasey Coates of Illinois and Stacy Smith of Georgia, three sisters, Judy Stanley of Oregon, Bonnie Vance and Barbara (George) May, both from Iowa and one brother, John Vance (Mary Jane), also from Iowa; nine grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Chelcie Smith, Alicia Coates, Danielle Smith, OJ Smith Jr, McKayla Smith, Dylan Smith, Madison Smith, Timothy Smith and five great grand children, Bentley Hobdy, Eli Hamilton, Ariyah Hobdy, Kalanei Kilpatrick and Sophie Carr.

Memorial Service will be held at NAS Pensacola on Thursday, September 12 in conjunction with a Blue Angels Practice demonstration scheduled for that day. Service will include full military honors celebrating both Kathy and Charles Coates.

The family wishes to acknowledge Jeannie and David Black, best friends and neighbors who became Kathy’s second family, as well as Gail Jernigan and Mary Ann Balzer. She loved you all dearly. Thank you to the host of doctors, specifically Dr Rohit Amin and his staff at the CHF clinic as well as many, many caregivers at Sacred Heart Hospital. Your kindness, compassion and hope over the last eight months was a comfort to Kathy and our family. And finally, a special thank you to home health nurse Geri Coffee, fellow Iowan and maidrite lover who lovingly gave such great care to both Kathy and Chuck during their illnesses.
