John Paul Thelin, 62, passed away Monday morning, July 1, 2019, at his home in Navarre, Florida.

John was born April 21, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois, to Harriet and Henry Thelin. He was retired from both Law enforcement at the San Diego, California, Police Department, and UPS in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He had just recently moved to Navarre and was looking forward to enjoying his retirement years in our community.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Thelin; mother, Harriet (Zolinski) Thelin; and two brothers, Henry Thelin and Edward Thelin.

John was blessed with a large family whom he loved dearly. He is survived by his “Angel” Millicent; a son, John Henry of San Diego, California; three daughters, Emily, Claire, and Melissa; and four grandchildren, Mike, Abby, Emmett, and Jailyn of Minneapolis, Minnesota; He is also survived by, two sisters, Karen Thelin of Oceano, California, and Lillian Ferguson of Highland, Indiana; and five brothers, Joseph Thelin of Santa Maria, California, Carl Thelin of Garland, Texas, Tom Thelin of Leominster, Massachusetts, Michael Thelin of Imperial Beach, California, and Andy Thelin of Los Osos, California.

John was a top-notch athlete; playing football in high school and helping his team make it to the state finals. He continued his football career at the college and the semi-pro level until he decided to pursue a career in Law Enforcement. John always kept active in sports throughout his life playing baseball and coaching his children's soccer teams.

John had an incredible smile, never met a stranger, and was a lifelong friend to many. A ‘Celebration of Life’ Memorial Service is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., August 17, 2019, at the Police Officers Association Bldg., 8388 Vickers Street, San Diego, California 92111.

Sincere condolences from the Schwalbach family. Worked with and around John out of Eastern Division, East SD beats. Great stand-up guy, great sense of humor, and the type of cop you wanted to show up if you needed backup. Sorry to hear of his passing at a relatively young age. You will be missed.

I want to take this opportunity to offer my sympathy to all those who mourn John's death. My life was forever changed when I was invited into the Thelin Family in 1968 and spent several summers with them in their house on Paulina with Joe and John. Henry and Harriet welcomed me like another son into their home. It was because of Tom that I became woven into their family. I met him at a Vocation Week at St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. His encouragement, support and friendship changed my life forever. May all who mourn John's death be encircled in Resurrection Hope. May John rest in Christ's peace and rise in Christ's glory.

To the family and friends of John Thelin and his "angel, Millicent"; On behalf of the people at UPS in Winston-Salem, N.C. please accept our deepest and most heartfelt condolences on the loss of your father, grandfather, brother and friend. John was well liked in our building and we are deeply shocked and saddened by his sudden passing.I worked with John at UPS in W-S. and got to know him and become friends with him. He went much too soon. On a personal note to Millicent, thank you for bringing so much happiness and hope to John. You were a wonderful blessing to him. All of us will miss John and we will never forget him. Bill Malone Winston-Salem, NC
